The cock-fighting bill being discussed would increase the penalty for hosting or watching a cock fight. The penalty was lowered from a felony to a misdemeanor by former Rep. Ronnie Davis who allegedly received $30,000 in bribes from cock-fighters.

It passed Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday, 8-0, and went to the Senate Finance Committee to be costed out – but can the state afford to implement it? The fiscal note on the bill, prepared by legislative staff, is here.

Staff thought that the increase in revenues would be minor, and that the cost of incarceration of offenders would probably be about $145,000 a year, based on twenty persons being convicted of a Class E felony the first year.
