The Tennessee Valley Authority’s only Democrat and first female board member steps down:

MSNBC and the AP have just called the Congressional special election for Democrat Travis Childer in Mississippi's 1st District, one of the most solidly Republican districts in the US. A district that went for GW Bush in 2004 by 25 percentage points.

Republicans who have been losing their national brand name as the party of smaller government and low taxes, have relied on the very group they are often embarrassed of to propel them across finish lines: social conservatives. But as I’ve written about many times before, if a Democrat takes those issues from us, uh-oh….he can win.

Democrats have already fared well in two special elections to the House: once in Illinois and again in Louisiana.  This time, as in Louisiana, a Democrat, Travis Childers, has closed the gap in a district where “the GOP ranks are as numerous as magnolia blossoms.”

The Oak Ridger newspaper offers up an interesting potential selection for John McCain’s running-mate: Lamar Alexander:

Trent Lott, now retired from the U.S. Senate and embarking on a lobbying career, is spreading around monies leftover in his campaign warchest giving rise to concerns that disbursements could be seen as purchases of influence on behalf of Lott’s lobbying clients.
