A near-record drought last year prompted suggestions to decrease fireworks use, but the rockets’ red glare will glow in backyards this weekend, fire officials said.

To many people fireworks can seem like a low risk, said Randy Fox, a Columbia Fire Department training officer.

• A man died after a house fire Thursday night on Roxanne Drive in Antioch. When firefighters arrived, neighbors were knocking on windows and doors trying to rouse the resident.
