Remember Pete Mitchell? You probably know him better as Maverick, the cocky, risk-taking fighter pilot in Top Gun. The same advice that Maverick received from Stinger, his commanding officer on the aircraft carrier where he served, certainly applies to Vanderbilt football.

Back in the day when I was at UT, a top twenty basketball game between UT and Vanderbilt meant that the Lady Vols were playing the Lady Dores (and let me just say, that was quite the rivalry there for a few years.  For those of you who don’t recall, the intensity of it was why they added a second game to the schedule of both teams each year).

As expected, the Commodores have indeed cracked the AP men’s college basketball Top 25. Vanderbilt is #23 in that poll and #25 in the ESPN-USA Today poll.
