I can't believe that my favorite niece is turning six years old today. It seems like just yesterday that my sister was calling me to tell me she was on her way and I was heading to the hospital so I could wait with them for her arrival.

The moment I stepped into the hospital room and saw my sister and brother-in-law, holding this tiny little person is one that I'll never forget.

And now, she's turning six.

With Fred Thompson out of the race, some of his Tennessee supporters have signed on for Mitt Romney. I understand why they have; as has been noted before, the current crop of GOP candidates leaves much to be desired. I don’t think Romney was a terrible governor, and he does have an impressive resume. There are certainly worse candidates out there than him.

When Big Fella and I were young marrieds, we ate bean soup for dinner at least four times a month because it was cheap. Which is why it took me so long to realize I don’t like it. It invariably disappoints. Either it’s watery, or strongly beany tasting, or bland. Or if the mixture includes a lot of meat for flavor, the soup is greasy or salty.
