People will not endure hunger for very long - especially when food is as prevalent and abundant as it is in this country - before they begin taking matters into their own hands. I'll bet supermarkets in the area have seen shoplifting "soar" as well, too.....

The lunch crowd at Community Care Fellowship is the biggest I've seen it, and the ladies who run the dayroom there tell me it's unbelievable how many people are coming in asking for help, for everything from food to clothing to medicines to rent to gas money to help with utility bills.

In the United States, the primary victims are the poor and lower middle class, a group already burdened by housing woes, stagnant wages, and record fuel costs. As a result, food banks have seen a 20 to 25 percent spike in the number of people seeking help in 2008.

  • Fair trade everyone can use. Traidcraft starts selling fair trade toilet paper. Text on the packaging: "I'm flushing away unfair trade." Actually, from I can tell, I don't know that the toilet paper itself is fair trade certified. However, it's made from 100% recycled paper, and proceeds from sales go into a fund to help Traidcraft support their producer communities.
