Several years ago, an article in Time magazine about the rise of what the magazine termed "modem cowboys" - professionals who were full-time telecommuting from homes far away from their employers - so intrigued me that I saved a copy of it for years.

So I am working on a couple of projects this weekend that have badly needed completing for a long time, and I just came across an old post from 1999 where I am all excited and happy about getting a new 56K (dialup) modem.

It kind of feels like I just admitted I remember when the light bulb was invented or something. Hee.

If you asked my friends what my number one hobby was they would probably tell you video games. I have been playing games online since the time I got my first 2400 baud modem in 1993. Back then the games were mainly text based like Trade Wars and Legend of the Red Dragon. My first taste of multiplayer first person shooters was a classic that many of you may have heard of called Doom.

I've been online now for some 13 years. I started with AOL and quickly learned that they'd rather promote spam than provide me with real email filters. I switched to BellSouth and had been a happy customer for most of those 13 years...until now.

When I got in my car today, Sean Hannity was on. I know, I know–but that’s the station I’d been listening to earlier. I’ve pretty much established what I think of him before, but what he and his guest, Bernie Goldberg, had to say today really drives homes those feelings.

Apparently we've had it for a few days but our ISP never bothered to notify us. Stupid us, I guess we should have been plugging the stupid modem in daily to check, but we were expecting line noise to tip us off (our old ADSL line had horrible noise without a filter).

In celebration, here is a picture of a sunset as taken from our balcony. Our camera isn't anywhere near as good as our old one that was - ahem - lost when my husband went to Wales, but you get the idea.

Yesterday was one of the most frustrating days of my life.  Not only did the Titans lose, my 2nd favorite NFL team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost, and the internet at my house didn't work on the one day I wanted to be a part of the open thread more than any other.  I can't tell you how many times I turned off my modem, reset my modem, and hit the refresh button in explorer, all to no avail.
