In late February 2003, before the invasion of Iraq, I wrote of, "The coming American Holy War," in which I outlined "a template that describes modern American war-making as drawing on both the Northern and Southern models," of which the American Civil War is the premier, though not only, example.

During the American Civil War the country was divided in two.  It’s an oversimplification I know but...In the North a general named John Tyler fought for the freedom of slaves (among other things).  In the South general Robert E. Lee waged war against the Union forces.  Between them - North and South - a line was drawn called the Mason-Dixon.

Early battles like Bull Run (or “Manassas” if you prefer) were enjoyed by picnic-packing Washington socialites* from distant hill tops. No one expected the protracted war that ensued. No one imagined the cost. Is that where this is headed?

Candidates on both sides came into Iowa and New Hampshire expecting Desert Storm’s lightning fast finish. Instead it looks like we’re going to get trench warfare a la World War I.
