It should come as no surprise to anyone that housing and services for the mentally ill have critical shortages. Mental health deregulation simply forced states that were woefully unprepared to take on the responsibility for their mentally ill citizens. Of course, no money was provided with this sly "unfunded mandate," so counties and cities were quickly overwhelmed and drained their meager mental health budgets on about the first five folks who showed up with bags in hand.
