close friends

.I love the Internet. I love blogging. I love Twitter. I love you! When I first dipped my toe in the blogging water I heard all this talk of "community" in the blog world. I thought it sounded a bit contrived. How could you have close friends that you haven't met?

I’m learning a lot, watching the world through the experience of my very old grandmother. It’s true that every day is a gift, and you can learn something every day. But sometimes it’s hard to be grateful for that gift when the day brings pain, or loneliness or isolation. And things you learn, you might just as soon not know.

Jonathan Martin argues that John McCain is forced to compare Barack Obama to Jimmy Carter because, frankly, he’s the only Democratic punching bag left:

With Memorial Day coming up, J and I invited some close friends and their kids (who are also H's close friends) to come over to the house to swim and grill out. We've had a pool for about 6 years, and have great memories of the kids having a blast in the water while the parents get together at the same time. This year, the mom of one of H's best friends said her daughter doesn't want to swim.

There are two words I need to hear from you if we’re going to be close friends.  I’ll love you and even like you if I don’t hear these two words, but, I’ll admit, I won’t feel all that loved.  I need to hear “sorry” and “thanks.”

Vince and I have two anniversaries we celebrate each year. One is when we met (February 14, 2000) and one is when we held a private ceremony with close friends (April 20, 2002) in Washington. Both come close to each other and are always a nice way to go into Spring. [...]

Go and hug a friend now. Hug your spouse and your kids. Hug your mother.

And then, find someone your not close friends with, and let them know their loved. Stop worrying about whether you’ll sound dorky, or aren’t cool enough to talk to that person. Life shouldn’t be about impressing people.

I care about you.

There is something profoundly spiritual about spending time with close friends.
That’s why I’m concluding this blog post to go spend time with them.
