My Lord, that was awful. The first hour contained not a single question on any matter of policy. Not one. They asked about flag pins for crying out loud. They asked no questions, as far as I could tell, about the torture memos, about FISA, about health care, about deregulation, about the housing mortgage crisis, the world food crisis, global warming, al Qaeda or Pakistan.

I have been working with a graduate student on a project that is looking into government programs to encourage angel investment that he is conducting for a national angel network group. He sent along an article published last fall in the Economist that said the following:

It should come as no surprise to anyone that housing and services for the mentally ill have critical shortages. Mental health deregulation simply forced states that were woefully unprepared to take on the responsibility for their mentally ill citizens. Of course, no money was provided with this sly "unfunded mandate," so counties and cities were quickly overwhelmed and drained their meager mental health budgets on about the first five folks who showed up with bags in hand.
