Today is the 50th anniversary of the establishment of NASA.

The driving force, of course, was the launch of Sputnik on Oct. 4, 1957, followed by its even weightier successors. In the midst of the Cold War, a country that aspired to global preeminence could not let that challenge pass.

Today is the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Symbol.

If you’re like me, you have no idea how the symbol originated. You might be surprised to learn that it actually was designed with some meaning attached not just a faddish hippy thing.

It was designed by Gerald Holtem.

2007 marked the 50th anniversary of the publication of one of my favorite novels, Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged”. I first read it over a decade ago. It was then, and remains, one of the most influential pieces of literature in my personal and professional development.
