A race for the state House has turned negative with the mailing of a flier alleging a Columbia Republican hosted a party that served alcohol to minors.

OK, it's a little unorthodox to start attacking a state legislator this early in his reelection campaign. But Democrats couldn't resist making an exception of Republican Rep. Tom DuBois of Columbia. When he started holding town meetings to boast about his crime-fighting credentials, they decided to make DuBois the lucky recipient of the first mudball of the 2008 campaign.

Democrats have wasted little time kicking off what could be a steady flow of negative advertising from both parties this legislative campaign season.

■ Rep. Tom DuBois (R-Columbia) threw a Mule Day party at his home last Saturday that Democrats will make sure isn’t forgotten until after the November election. DuBois says adults who served beer at the party checked IDs, but some teenagers charged with alcohol-related offenses told police they drank at the party.

News Channel 5 began the story of Tom DuBois’ Mule Day bash complete with state legislators, lobbyists, and several minors consuming alcohol as well as at least one person who left driving under the influence.

Two Unrelated arrests are related by their original location!  Tom DuBois’s home Muleday part got a little “out of hand” Saturday night when over 900 people (over the course of the day) attended his party.  DuBois maintains that he and others carded all that drank alcohol at his home but that if someone brought their own he could have missed them.  Instead of being arrested

If what they’re saying is true, then Representative Tom DuBois (R-Columbia) knows how to party. According to a report in the Columbia Daily Herald, Dubois hosted some midday revelry in his hometown this past weekend which reached 900 exuberant partygoers all hopped up on mules.

Republicans in the state legislature have introduced comprehensive legislation to combat drunk driving in Tennessee, legislation that would deploy a multi-faceted approach to the problem that includes automatic license revocation, lowering legal blood alcohol content levels for certain offenses, greater use of ignition interlock devices, a ban on open containers, and tougher penalties against repeat offenders and for those who refuse to take the BAC test.
