More than 80 applications were received in June for the outgoing police chief’s seat, city officials said Wednesday.

Police Chief Barry Crotzer will officially retire in October, but because of accrued vacation time, he will likely step down this month, City Personnel Director Kate Collier said. Crotzer has been chief since 2002.

If what they’re saying is true, then Representative Tom DuBois (R-Columbia) knows how to party. According to a report in the Columbia Daily Herald, Dubois hosted some midday revelry in his hometown this past weekend which reached 900 exuberant partygoers all hopped up on mules.

I just got an email from the folks at TIRCC about a vigil in support of the Islamic Center of Columbia, which, as you may know, was desecrated with racist graffiti and then burnt to the ground.  It’s hard to know what to say in the face of that kind of nonsense, but you show up and you face it down.  That’s about all you can do, sometimes.
