"I wanna hand Daddy the cans!!!!” Gresham, age five, screamed yesterday.  (Though, to be fair to the kid, it’s hard to tell when he’s screaming and when he’s just talking.  He’s got a voice amplification issue of some sort.)

One of the unfortunate consequences of being more prepared for Gustav and of having less urban destruction than Katrina's is complacency. It is the complacency of assuming we're fine and we don't have to learn from mistakes that were made in areas less populous than New Orleans.

Watching the news shows which were following Hurricane Gustav it was only this morning when the Today show interviewed FEMA head Michael Brown that I heard the first reminder that what has really changed since Katrina is that Bobby Jindal, the REPUBLICAN, governor of Louisiana, is now in charge. We didn't have New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin having a turf war with former Governor Kathleen Blanco.
