Well, I suppose if Gunner can post on economics, I can post on gardening. If we're really heading into the next Great Depression, gardening might soon become more than a hobby for a lot of folks. So... let's jump in and get dirty!

First of all - it's Fall! I'm originally from South Florida (zone 10!) so this is the time I would be planting if I was still there.

Pricey dirt produced with ingredients from all over the world? Even as the price of dirt goes up, we're trying to do more amending ourselves, adding work casings and our own compost to soil, and purchasing local soil blends from places like the Gardens of Babylon in Farmers' Market.

So we finally got settled in and I made some progress on the play and no progress on the ethnology project. Between you and me, I'm sick of the ethnology project. I can't really come to any conclusions beyond "Mah people?

First I blogged about how Becky and I are defining simplicity these days.  Then, I wrote about the changes we’ve slowly made toward simplicity over the last few years.  Today, the stuff we’re trying out next in an effort to take less so we can give more.

Here’s that list:

Yesterday I wrote about how Becky and I have tried to simplify our thinking about simplicity.  Today is all about how we’ve, over the last three years, simplified how we live as a result of that kind of thinking.  I want to be clear though that we have not “arrived” - whatever that is - but we feel we’re still in transition toward simplicity.

  • Monterey Mushrooms - one of East Tennessee's hidden gems, and a great place for the gardener.

East Tennessee is full of discoveries waiting to be discovered, and wife Sally and I found one on Tuesday -- the Monterey Mushrooms Company in Loudon County.

Just give me a few weeks, and you'll get the new me. Fresh posts from fresh compost. I promise you won't be disappointed (well you may, but that's not a good way to get people to check your blog). May 21 is the day. Not a moment too soon, nor a day too late. Its just the right time. You'll see.

While I have always recycled and been frugal with my resources, I have become more so as I get older. I tried composting for the first time last summer in an open pit area in the backyard, but the food stuffs didn’t “compost”. They just sat there. Recently I learned that the Public Works Department of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County sells composters at cost to individuals. To schools and other non-profit groups, the composters are free.
