Tennessee Congressman John Tanner recently went door-to-door in northern Mississippi, campaigning for fellow Democrat Travis Childers, who went on to win the GOP stronghold.

The nomination of former Congressman Bob Barr by the Libertarian Party for President may just prove to be the beginning of the rise of the party as a “real” political party:

MSNBC and the AP have just called the Congressional special election for Democrat Travis Childer in Mississippi's 1st District, one of the most solidly Republican districts in the US. A district that went for GW Bush in 2004 by 25 percentage points.

Democrats today are cheering over the fact that Travis Childers beat Greg Davis 54-46 in a special election for the Mississippi 1st Congressional district.

Republicans who have been losing their national brand name as the party of smaller government and low taxes, have relied on the very group they are often embarrassed of to propel them across finish lines: social conservatives. But as I’ve written about many times before, if a Democrat takes those issues from us, uh-oh….he can win.
