In 2000, California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 22, which defined marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman. Then, in 2004, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom began issuing more than 4,000 marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Back in 2000, voters in California passed Proposition 22, which defines marriage as between one man and one woman, with 62% of the vote -- a slam-dunk. Right now, Proposition 22 is being argued before the California Supreme Court.
